The Gordon Cup

The Gordon Cup traces its origins to remarkably humble beginnings. In 1958, Livingston High School captured the inaugural Gordon Cup championship while competing in the fledgling five-team North Jersey Scholastic Hockey League. By 1973, just fifteen years later, the league had expanded to 15 teams competing across two divisions—a testament to the sport's rapid growth and increasing popularity.

The Gordon Cup was established as a permanent trophy by the Essex County Park Commission in honor of Kenneth B. Gordon, who served as a Commissioner from 1938 to 1957. Gordon played a pivotal role in the Commission's decision to construct Branch Brook Ice Center and South Mountain Arena, two facilities that helped lay the foundation for the development of scholastic hockey in New Jersey. A passionate supporter of the game, he attended many league contests during its formative years and personally presented the trophy to championship teams.

While the Gordon Cup is admired for its impressive and elegant appearance, its true significance extends far beyond the trophy itself. It represents the dedication, perseverance, and achievement of generations of student-athletes who have competed at the highest level of New Jersey high school hockey. For every player who has taken the ice in pursuit of a championship, winning the Gordon Cup has been the ultimate goal.

More than a championship trophy, the Gordon Cup stands as a symbol of the remarkable evolution of high school hockey in New Jersey. From a small and struggling athletic endeavor to one of the state's premier scholastic sports, its history mirrors the growth of the game itself. Each champion adds to that legacy, earning a place among the finest teams to compete for one of New Jersey high school hockey's most prestigious honors.
